La película presenta a Tall Man (hombre alto en español e interpretado en esta película y sus posteriores secuelas por Angus Scrimm), un sobrenatural y malévolo empresario de pompas fúnebres que convierte a los difuntos en zombis enanos con el fin de crear un pequeño ejército que obedezca sus órdenes y cumpla sus oscuros fines.

Hasta el momento, la película tiene tres secuelas: Phantasm II, Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead y Phantasm IV: Oblivion.
